Invasive Species
In 1996 a strange palm tree materialised in a suburb of Cape Town. A close inspection revealed a painted metal stem, and crude synthetic leaves. This was no natural tree, but rather one of the world's first ever disguised cell phone towers. Since then, these “trees” have spread across the city in a variety of shapes and sizes. Intended to make the towers less conspicuous, these disguises have inadvertently made them even more prominent.
